If Angel Cabrera can secure a visa, the Masters hopes to welcome him back to Augusta National Golf Club. For the previous four years, he was unable to compete due to legal concerns.

2009 Grand Slam winner Cabrera has been refused a visa following his 30-month prison sentence for beating up two previous lovers. After his arrest in Brazil in January 2021, the Argentine was additionally charged with theft and illegal intimidation.

He was freed from detention in August and given the all-clear to compete in events sanctioned by the PGA Tour in December.

The 54-year-old Cabrera will compete in a PGA Tour Champions event in Morocco from February 22–24, where he is not required to have a visa. A week later, he’s entered in an event on the Korn Ferry Tour in Argentina. According to Golfweek, Cabrera has been invited to participate in the Insperity Invitational in Houston in May if he is granted a visa.

It has been four years since he last competed at the Masters.

At the Latin America Amateur Championship in Panama, Augusta National Golf Club chairman Fred Ridley told reporters, “Right now, we’ve been in constant contact with Angel’s representatives.” He is not in possession of a visa, and I am aware that the necessary procedures are being followed. We will be happy to have him back if he is able to resolve those legal matters, and we wish him success with that.”

On the PGA Tour, Cabrera has won three times in his career, including the 2007 U.S. Open. In addition to his two victories on the European Tour, he lost the 2013 Masters in a playoff match against Adam Scott.
