PHILADELPHIA- In essence, Marcus Mariota, a seasoned quarterback, agreed to a $5 million, one-year contract to serve as the Philadelphia Eagles’ backup quarterback for Jalen Hurts the previous season. From an accounting standpoint, however, Mariota, 30, signed a five-year contract that was formally voidable on Monday for salary-cap reasons. With Mariota, the Eagles have a cap figure of $1,932,000 for the 2023 season; however, the remaining $5 million ($3,068,000) will now be carried over to the 2023 cap after the vacancy is filled. A deep playoff run within the NovaCare Complex remains a feasible ambition, and the Eagles’ actions at backup quarterback could indicate how they feel about Tanner McKee as a second-year prospect.

From the team’s ascent to prominence in 2017 and their ride to the only Super Bowl victory in franchise history with No. 2, Nick Foles, after Carson Wentz had done the heavy lifting throughout the regular season before sustaining an ACL/LCL tear, the backup quarterback position in Philadelphia has been an interesting one. The Eagles managed to come back for a second time in 2018 with Wentz and Foles, but by 2019, Josh McCown, a 17-year-old, had been brought in to coach Wentz. The QB1 had suffered a concussion early in the playoffs against Seattle, and McCown had left for Jacksonville. Wentz ended up missing the entire season due to a torn hamstring. In part due to the Eagles’ choice to choose Jalen Hurts with the 53rd overall pick in the second round rather than a seasoned backup, Doug Pederson’s final season in 2020 saw things go completely wrong. Although history has since been somewhat revised, the initial idea was to have a cheap backup for Wentz, who was still the franchise quarterback at the time, and to eventually spin off Hurts for a sizable draft pick if he demonstrated improvement during what was anticipated to be limited playing time.
