Adonai Mitchell of Texas was chosen by ESPN’s Matt Miller as the best “value” pick for the Steelers in the first round of the NFL Draft, which is quickly approaching.
According to me, Mitchell ranks No. 18 on the final board. Mitchell contributes to ESPN. That value is something the Steelers must cherish, but it also covers a gap. Pittsburgh needs to find a receiver to replace Diontae Johnson since Russell Wilson or Justin Fields are now starting at quarterback.
Johnson would be mostly replaced by Mitchell’s vertical speed in the Steelers’ vertical throwing game.
Mitchell, who caught 55 receptions for 845 yards and 11 touchdowns at the University of Texas in the previous season, completed the 40-yard dash in a scorching 4.32 seconds at the NFL Combine.

Mitchell is similar to the receivers the Steelers have traditionally selected in the NFL Draft and has the potential to be even more potent in offensive coordinator Arthur Smith’s scheme than Drake London was in Atlanta.
Mitchell had an average depth of target of 16 yards and an average after-the-catch of 3.2 yards per reception, as noted by Pro Football Focus.
Mitchell is described by NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein as an “ascending prospect with size.” He still needs to bridge the gap between his speed and ball skills to become a very good NFL receiver. Mitchell is still learning how to bully the catch space in close quarters and jump-ball battles, but he can beat press and has the speed to extend the fight to the third level.
