With the NY Giants’ playmakers returning to East Rutherford for the optional offseason program, the absence of outstanding wide receiver Darius Slayton has been disappointing. ESPN’s Jordan Raanan said that Slayton is not with the team because he wants a contract extension.

Darius Slayton has been absent from the optional offseason program.

Slayton, who has led the Giants in receiving yards for four of the last five seasons, agreed to a two-year, $12.2 million contract last summer. He’s in the final year of his contract, but he’s hoping for more money. While speaking with the media, Joe Schoen confirmed that this has not been discussed:

The Giants haven’t had any Darius Slayton contract extension conversations

Schoen made it clear that he loves Slayton and does not want any problems with him coming up to Week 1, but is NY in a position to offer him a new contract? Probably not. Trade rumors have already begun to circulate since the Slayton announcement.

Jalin Hyatt was selected in the third round last spring, and the Giants are hoping he can make a significant improvement in his second season. When you consider that New York might utilize the No. 6 overall pick on Malik Nabers, Rome Odunze, or Marvin Harrison Jr., it begs the question of if a Slayton trade is in the works.

If the price is good, the speedster will undoubtedly attract the attention of a number of teams. Slayton had some drop troubles with the Giants in recent seasons, but he improved in 2023 and was quite reliable when catching passes from Daniel Jones, Tyrod Taylor, or Tommy DeVito.

Slayton finished the season with 50 receptions for 770 yards (a career high) and four touchdowns. After a great year, it’s reasonable that he’s skipping voluntary exercises in the hopes that Schoen will reward him with a new deal. However, at the moment, we do not see it occurring for him.
