Over the course of a busy weekend at the Dolphins’ rookie minicamp, 27 prospects demonstrated their abilities, and two—center Ireland Brown of Rutgers and cornerback Jason Maitre of Wisconsin—came away as team signees. The Dolphins’ secondary may benefit from Maitre’s flexibility and strong statistics from his time at Wisconsin and Boston College. Brown offers a blend of experience and versatility to the team after switching from defensive tackle to offensive line throughout his undergraduate career.

In the meantime, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s future is uncertain due to rookie signings and the impending possibility of a contract extension. There is pressure on Tagovailoa and the Dolphins to come to an agreement since Jared Goff’s historic four-year, $212 million contract with the Detroit Lions has set a new standard in quarterback wages. Negotiations are still going on despite the two quarterbacks’ records and statistics being compared.

On the field, rookie wide receiver Malik Washington made an impression by showing up early and spending time getting to know Tagovailoa. Washington hopes to have an impact with his speed and skill set. Last season, he led all FBS receivers in catches and broken tackles. Steve Smith, a former Pro Bowl receiver, is an inspiration to Washington, who wants to play like him.

Sixth-round pick Patrick McMorris is also progressing at the minicamp, displaying his flexibility and special team ability. McMorris, who has expertise in a variety of special team roles, is hoping that his versatility and dedication will help him earn a spot on the roster.

For Jaylen Wright, the rookie running back, obtaining Xavien Howard’s old jersey number has sentimental significance. Wright views Howard’s exit as a chance to establish himself on the squad and use his quickness and uncomplicated rushing style to help the Dolphins offense.

All things considered, the Dolphins’ rookie minicamp offered an insight into the team’s future, with intriguing possibilities and possible extensions influencing the story as the summer goes on.
