Despite being picked in the fourth round and 135th pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Dak Prescott quickly became the Dallas Cowboys’ starting quarterback. Even as a rookie, Prescott started all 16 games, leading the Cowboys to a playoff trip and a 13-3 record.
He’s been the Cowboys’ starting quarterback for eight seasons, but he’s entering the final year of his contract and is poised for a large salary.
Given that he consistently keeps the Cowboys in contention, having made the playoffs in five of his eight seasons as a starter, it’s difficult to picture either side wanting to move on after the 2024 season, when he will be eligible for free agency.
Prescott may even be willing to accept a team-friendly contract deal to stay with the Cowboys.
From the Cowboys’ viewpoint, hearing Prescott say he doesn’t want to be the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL is refreshing. That’s fantastic because some of those players earn more than $50 million per season, but Prescott won’t be far behind.
He already earns an average of $40 million per season, but the market rate for an exceptional quarterback has risen since he signed his agreement in 2021. While Dallas’ quarterback is unlikely to reset the market, he will undoubtedly remain among the top five highest-paid quarterbacks, but as previously stated, he may be prepared to structure the deal as the Cowboys like in order to build the strongest roster possible around him.
