The New Orleans Saints haven’t made many headline-grabbing acquisitions this offseason, but they have made a lot of depth moves. On Friday, the Saints signed wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown and quarterback Kellen Mond. Both veterans are considered depth signings, and they will battle for positions on the depth chart.

Mond is the second quarterback New Orleans has signed this summer. One of the team’s first free agent signings was Nathan Peterman. The Peterman addition did not excite supporters, but there is speculation that he could be an extension of the coaching staff due to his relationship with new quarterback coach Andrew Janocko. In any case, the Saints need a backup quarterback to replace Derek Carr after losing Jameis Winston to the Cleveland Browns, and Mond might fit that job.

Saints sign quarterback Kellen Mond

The Minnesota Vikings drafted Kellen Mond in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He had the opportunity to work with Klint Kubiak, the offensive coordinator in Minnesota at the time, during his year in New Orleans. Unfortunately, the Vikings waived Mond heading into his second season.

He was claimed by the Cleveland Browns and released a year later. He then spent time on the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad before joining the Saints. Despite all of this bouncing around, Mond has only played in one regular season game. That was in 2021, with the Vikings. During the game, he only tried three throws, completing two for five yards.

Mond is now in a room with Derek Carr, Nathan Peterman, and Jake Haener. Carr is definitely the undisputed starter, but New Orleans lacks a clear QB2 like they did with Jameis Winston on the roster. That will be resolved throughout the offseason and training camp.
