Former Manchester United player Wayne Rooney has addressed his absence from the BBC’s Match of the Day on Saturday night.

Wayne Rooney, a former Manchester United player, has stated that an injury prevented him from making his first appearance on BBC’s Match of the Day on Saturday night.

During his post-playing career, the former United and England player has entered the management ranks. He had formerly played for Derby County and DC United, but is currently unemployed following a grueling 15-game stint at Birmingham City near the end of 2023.

There has been much conjecture about Rooney’s future career move, and it looks that, for the time being, he has decided to try his hand at punditry. In recent weeks, he has been spotted commenting on Premier League Productions’ coverage of English football.

“Unfortunately, I suffered a serious back injury while on vacation with my family, but I hope to join the squad soon. Best wishes to @GaryLineker and the boys for tonight’s concert, and see you soon.

As Rooney mentioned, fellow former professional Lineker hosts the show, which is joined by ex-Arsenal player Martin Keown and ex-Man City defender Micah Richards.

The official Match of the Day X account responded to Rooney’s initial post with: “Looking forward to having you on soon.”
