While Real Madrid, PSV Eindhoven, and Inter Milan all appear to be the league champions-elect, we are just a little more than twenty-four hours away from a fitting end to an incredible season from a team who, in contrast to the aforementioned trio, was no one’s favorite to win the championship back in August.

The ten-year reign of Bayern Munich has finished, and in grand fashion. Thomas Tuchel has lost his position of authority as Bayer Leverkusen has taken the top spot.
After defeating Werder Bremen at home on Sunday, Xabi Alonso’s club will have won the Bundesliga for the first time.

Name them the “Neverkusen.” Identify them as the enduring bridesmaids. It’s Leverkusen’s turn to finally don white and make his way down the aisle.

For one member of Alonso’s team, though, the festivities might feel a touch too sad. Since winning the FA Cup and the Community Shield at Manchester United in 2016 under Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, Timothy Fosu-Mensah has not even touched trophies.

Or, conversely, perhaps not. If you look through any recent photos of Leverkusen’s exuberant players, Fosu-Mensah is frequently the center of attention during the festivities.

Even if the Dutchman hasn’t played as much as he would have liked during an incredible season alongside former Liverpool, Bayern, and Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso, he won’t hesitate to get his hands on the Bundesliga shield.
