NEWPORT City FC’s thrilling semifinal victory has put them 90 minutes away from winning the FAW Trophy.

After eliminating holders Trethomas Bluebirds, the Steelmen, who are now ranked third in Ardal SE, defeated Cefn Cribwr 4-3 in a thrilling match held at Penydarren. They will now play Ardal NE leaders Penrhyncoch.

At The Bont Playing Fields, Newport overcame an early deficit with goals from Rhyse Hudson, Cole Jarvis, and Calum

Fourth-placed Ardal SW player Cefn Cribwr scored again deep into first-half extra time, and tensions were high until Martyn Mickiewicz’s goal in the 89th minute restored Newport’s two-goal lead.

Even then, there was still time for Bridgend to score a third goal and for Kofi Rowe to receive a second yellow card, but the Steelmen prevailed to secure a berth in the championship game on Saturday, April 20 (location and kickoff to be confirmed).
The club is in the running for promotion to the Cymru South and is set for a final after fighting for survival in the Ardal SE last season, where they ultimately finished in 10th place.
