Though it doesn’t seem like many in the NFL are believing it, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton hasn’t ruled out the potential that Russell Wilson would continue to start for the team next season.

There is “virtually no one around the league” who thinks the Broncos intend to keep Wilson, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, who penned a story on Saturday. Because of Wilson’s large contract, Fowler stated that trading him will be “an arduous task” for Denver. However, it is anticipated that the Broncos will release Wilson, whether through an outright release or a trade.

When Wilson was benched with two games left in the regular season, it was very obvious that the Broncos had given up on him. If they bench him, they will still suffer a significant financial loss, but even though Payton said it was a football decision, Wilson’s injury guarantee would not kick in if Jarrett Stidham was selected instead of him.

Payton stated in the days leading up to the Super Bowl that the Broncos needed to assess if they could improve at quarterback through free agency or the draft. Wilson may already be making preparations for a new beginning somewhere else, even though the coach has given him permission to return.

Wilson concluded his debut season under Payton with 3,076 yards, 26 touchdown passes, and 8 interceptions. Even if the outcomes were far better than they were the previous season, it is clear that the Broncos were not satisfied.
