A commanding victory for Team Europe in the Ryder Cup was commanded by their captain so skillfully that he was granted permission to rally the troops once more in 2025.
When it was announced that the Swede would captain the squad eighteen months after Europe attempted to win back the Ryder Cup in Rome, Henrik Stenson could not have asked for more.
The European Twelve enjoyed a dominant three days at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club. However, Stenson was not the focal point of the victorious moments. At the trophy presentation, Stenson wasn’t even serenaded by his players’ cries of “two more years.”
Rather, Luke Donald was in charge in Rome because he will be in New York next year. After relocating to LIV Golf, Stenson had long since lost his captaincy. He watched from Florida, over 5,000 miles away, as the United States continued its 30-year losing streak away from home.
Standard Sport is told by Stenson, “I watched some of it.” The two morning classes were almost finished by the time I woke up because of the time difference.
“The boys obviously performed incredibly well and built quite a sizable lead. As usual, one team made a small comeback on Sunday, and at one point it appeared tighter. After two days, it concluded with a European victory, just as you anticipated.
“Every plan that was implemented was successful and profitable here at home.”
Stenson lasted just 127 days as the European captain. At the time, he expressed his dissatisfaction at not being able to carry out his duties in addition to competing in LIV events, but Ryder Cup Europe responded by saying he would “not be able to fulfil certain contractual obligations.”
For the atmosphere he fostered for the players both during the week leading up to the Ryder Cup and throughout the competition itself, Donald won a great deal of appreciation. However, Stenson believes that a lot of successful things have deeper origins.
A significant portion of that, according to Stenson, was a continuation of the work that we began a year earlier.
“Everything that has changed on the golf course, as well as many of the team members,. I knew what was going on even though I was far away from the squad.
